Biography

Mike Kent writes and teaches in the areas of constitutional law, local government, land use regulation, and real property.

A past recipient of Campbell Law’s Excellence in Research Award, Kent has published scholarship in numerous law journals, including the William & Mary Law Review, the Utah Law Review, the Florida State University Law Review, and the University of Colorado Law Review. Since 2014, he has served as the author of Webster’s Real Estate Law in North Carolina.

Kent has also been recognized as an accomplished teacher. The Campbell Law student body has twice voted him “1L Professor of the Year,” and he has received a Faculty Spotlight Award for his work in promoting student wellbeing.

In the community, Kent has served as a member of the North Carolina General Statutes Commission, a member and vice-chair of the Town of Cary Zoning Board of Adjustment, and a council member for the NCBA’s Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Section. He is an active member of Ambassador Presbyterian Church.

Prior to joining Campbell Law in 2013, Kent was a tenured faculty member at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School and previously served as a visiting professor at Stetson University College of Law. Before that, he was an attorney with the Georgia law firm now known as TisingerVance, where his practice focused primarily on local government, land use regulation, and public utilities. In the early part of his career, Kent clerked for Judge J. Owen Forrester of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, as well as for Judge Emmett Ripley Cox of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Kent holds a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he served as an Articles Editor for the Georgia Law Review. He earned his B.A., cum laude, from the University of Alabama.
