Biography

Dr. Charles A. Carter is a distinguished academic and industry leader with a dynamic career spanning academia, pharmaceutical development, and strategic consulting. He joined the College of Pharmacy & Health Science in 2015 and since 2022, he has served as Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical & Clinical Sciences at Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, where he oversees a team of dedicated faculty and staff in their teaching, research, and service initiatives.

Dr. Carter actively engages with students at multiple levels, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Research, as well as professional courses in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. Beyond the classroom, he is deeply committed to mentoring and advising students, supporting their academic and professional development. He also works closely with student organizations, including the Graduate Clinical Research Organization (GCRO), the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO), and Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.

Dr. Carter’s educational journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981, followed by a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in 1983. He completed a fellowship in Research Design and Methodology and a residency in Bioinformatics and Drug Information at the University of Tennessee. His passion for entrepreneurial innovation led him to earn an MBA from Christian Brothers University in 1994.

Prior to joining Campbell University, Dr. Carter accumulated extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He held leadership roles, including Executive Director of Medical Affairs at Salix Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he drove initiatives in medical education, scientific communication, and research to support the development of innovative pharmaceutical products.

In 1994, Dr. Carter founded Pharmaceutical Strategic Initiatives, LLC (PSI), a consulting firm offering strategic planning, clinical research design, regulatory preparation, and medical communications services to the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries worldwide. Under his leadership, PSI became a global provider of specialized services before its successful acquisition nearly two decades later.

Dr. Carter is a prolific researcher and collaborator, having contributed to numerous Phase 3 and Phase 4 clinical trials, as well as health economics and outcomes research studies. He has authored over 50 publications and presented at numerous national and international conferences. He is well traveled around the globe and his work reflects a commitment to advancing innovation and excellence in a rapidly evolving industry.

Today, Dr. Carter continues to inspire the next generation of pharmacy, clinical research, and pharmaceutical science professionals, fostering a passion for lifelong learning, research, and innovation.
