Biography
James Hampson joined Campbell University’s Physician Assistant Program in 2023 and currently serves as the Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Practice. In this role, he oversees the clinical year and contributes to clinical site and preceptor development, student assessment and mentorship, and clinical curriculum development. His work focuses on strengthening the clinical learning environment and building meaningful partnerships among students, preceptors, clinical sites, and the PA program.
Mr. Hampson graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina State University with Bachelor of Science degrees in Nutrition Science and Biological Sciences. He later completed Campbell University’s dual Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) and Master of Physician Assistant Practice (MPAP) program, receiving the Director’s Award, Excellence in Professionalism Award, and Interprofessional Education Leadership Recognition Award. He subsequently earned a Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) from Campbell University’s Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2024.
Mr. Hampson is currently pursuing a PhD in Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development with a concentration in Adult and Lifelong Education at North Carolina State University. His academic and scholarly interests include preceptor development, student assessment, professionalism, mentorship, and strategies to expand and strengthen clinical training capacity. He is particularly interested in understanding how clinicians learn through teaching and precepting and how health professions programs can better prepare, support, and retain clinical educators.
Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and licensed by the North Carolina Medical Board, Mr. Hampson provides comprehensive care to rural and underserved pediatric populations at a Federally Qualified Health Center. Before transitioning to PA education, he served as a clinical preceptor for several academic institutions. These experiences helped shape his interest in clinical teaching and preceptor development.
Mr. Hampson has presented nationally on topics related to PA education, preceptor engagement and development, professionalism, career development, and pediatric medicine. His professional development has included the HRSA-supported Campbell University Primary Care Champions Fellowship and advanced training in primary care preceptor development through Duke University.
Mr. Hampson is actively involved in professional service, advocacy, and mentorship within the PA profession, particularly in pediatric practice and PA education. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA), North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (NCAPA), PA Education Association (PAEA), and Society for Physician Assistants in Pediatrics (SPAP).
Outside of his professional work, Mr. Hampson enjoys riding motorcycles, playing hockey, and spending time with his wife and four children. He is also active in his local church, where he and his wife lead a community group.
