Mr. John Owens is a graduate of Campbell University (B.S. Sports Management 2009) during which time he was a member of the Campbell Band Program. As a student he was part of the Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Basketball Band, and was the Drum Major for the first ever Stadium Band.

He currently teaches music for Harnett County Schools in addition to his role at Campbell University. He is also the Principal Chair Bass Clarinet in the Sandhills Wind Symphony. Mr. Owens has played/taught and conducted at all levels of the K-12 educational spectrum. He is also a reviewer of national elementary music curriculum.

Mr. Owens is recognized at the national level for working with students in the area of fine arts with his specialty being music and drama. Currently he is one of the National Team Drama coaches for the IPHC movement. He received the Campbell University Instrumental Music Alumni of the Year Award in 2017.

Mr. Owens is a licensed minister in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church where he has served in various ministry roles to include Children’s Pastor, Youth Pastor, Minister of Music, Drama Coach, along with Associate Pastor.

Mr. Owens served various roles for Campbell Athletics to include marketing, communications, and operations. He also assisted in numerous NCAA and ACC events.

Mr. Owens holds a Master in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from the University of Phoenix.

Mr. Owens currently oversees the following areas:

  • Recruiting: This part of his job he works with admission and financial aid office to bring not only the best musicians to Campbell Band program but also quality students.
  • Academic Success: Mr. Owens has created the band program academic success program. This program looks at students who are struggling in the academic area along with health issues. Mr. Owens coordinates our academic side by focusing in on students who are in danger of losing financial aid, students who have below a 2.3 GPA, and students who volunteer to be in the program. The program offers study hall, academic coaching, and time management skills. In addition, Mr. Owens coordinate with Student Success office to help bridge accommodations, tutoring, group sessions, and other tools the office offers. In order to be successful academically a student must be well in the sense of health. He coordinates with our band athletic trainers, health center, and counseling services to get students the care they need.
  • Marketing: Mr. Owens coordinates the band marketing effort which includes athletic band branding, uniform designs, video production, photography services, and website upkeep.
  • Logistics and Operations: Mr. Owens work with the directors to insure all events run smoothly. This includes the managing of our Athletic Band Staff, Recruiting and Retention team, along with working in conjunction with Concert Band Staff. He helps to coordinate Concert Band and Athletic Band events. He also works to keep the athletic band inventory and making sure athletic band equipment is ready when needed
