Pamela W. McAfee

Biography

Pam McAfee is staff attorney for Judge Joseph Callaway in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. She is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Business and Consumer Bankruptcy Law and has an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. She is also certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Center as a Superior Court Mediator, is a Certified Mediator in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of North Carolina, and is an approved mediator in the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. At Campbell, Pam teaches the bankruptcy survey course, coached the ABA National Appellate Advocacy moot court teams in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and participated in the Campbell Connections mentoring program during 2015-2016 academic year.

From November 2013 through December 2015, Pam was a mediator with McAfee Mediation, focusing on dispute resolution primarily in the areas of bankruptcy, debtor-creditor disputes, business disputes, lender liability, and mortgage issues. Immediately prior to starting McAfee Mediation, Pam was a partner with Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, LLP, concentrating her practice in bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, and financial services litigation. She served as a staff attorney for the Honorable A. Thomas Small from 2001-2009, and for the court as a whole from September 2009-March 2010, at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Immediately after graduating from law school, she clerked for Judge J. Rich Leonard (now Dean Leonard) at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. She also worked for 5 years with Moore & Van Allen, PLLC as a commercial litigator and for a short time raised venture capital as Director of Business Development for a closely-held software company.

Pam has served on the Local Rules Committee for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina and on the Local Civil Rules Subcommittee for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, as well as the Section Council for the Bankruptcy and Dispute Resolution Sections of the North Carolina Bar Association and the Lawyers Support Committee of the Wake County Bar Association. She has contributed to many publications, including as Co-managing Editor and Contributing Editor of the North Carolina Bankruptcy Practice Manual, Sixth Edition (2007), as Contributing Editor to West’s Bankruptcy Exemption Manual from 2011-2016, and as Contributing Editor on the topic of “Exemptions” for the North Carolina Bankruptcy Practice Manual, Seventh Edition (2012), is a regular speaker at continuing legal education seminars on bankruptcy topics, and has often been retained as a consultant for bankruptcy-related appeals and briefing. She is a 2016 recipient of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Citizen Lawyer Award.

Pam grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. She lives in Raleigh with her husband, Andrew, who is a classical musician. In addition to her legal pursuits, she volunteers with HopeLine, Inc., a crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline, serving as the President of the Board of Directors for 2014-2015.
