Biography
Ray Im is a Korean-born American multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges lens-based media and ceramics. By integrating traditional ceramic techniques with photographic perspectives, he creates compelling contemporary installations. His work explores the dynamic relationship between these two mediums, offering a fresh perspective on the interplay of tradition and modernity within standalone objects and spatial environments. Influenced by the German Deadpan aesthetic, Im’s photography embraces a cool, formal, and detached quality. This objective, analytical approach extends beyond his two-dimensional work, serving as the conceptual anchor for his interdisciplinary installations, sculptural forms, and functional pottery.
Im holds a MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Art Photography from Baylor University. His exhibition record spans national and international venues, with notable showcases in Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Italy, and South Korea. Alongside his fine art practice, Im’s commercial photography has been commissioned by prominent publications across the United States and the United Kingdom. His recent accolades include a 2023 Artist Support Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, as well as prestigious artist-in-residence fellowships at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado (Spring 2024), and Starworks in Star, North Carolina (Spring 2025).
